    Description

1760 Beaufort County North Carolina NC Militia Records
    Author:
    James L. Douthat
    Description:
This 9 page publication details fines list for those that did not answer the muster calls. During the colonial period, the militia was the norm for the protection of the citizens. Most males between the ages of 16 and 45 were required to answer 6 muster calls a year (4 for company, 1 for battalion, 1 for regiment). Few lists of the participants were kept, except for the fines list. When a man failed to show, he was fined and the sheriff was required to collect. These fines were sent to the State Auditors and the lists survived. The militia listings are rare indeed and give names of individuals not found in tax list or census records. Alphabetical listing. Small Booklet.
