FC Fiber Optic Collimator / Focuser Laser Diode Engrave Etch Cut Mark IlluminateFC Fiber Optic Collimator / Focuser Laser Diode Engrave Etch Cut Mark Illuminate
Fiber optic collimator assembly that can focus the highly divergent output from a fiber optic cable to a narrow beam or a small spot suitable for illumination, engraving, etching, cutting or burning. This fits fiber cables with an FC type connector. Check our other auctions for similar modules with other connectors.
The collimator block is 1" x 1" x 1/2" and has 8-32 mounting holes on 2 sides. The focus is adjustable with the lens on fine pitch threads. This can be used with fibers with a core diameter up to 200um. Due to the small aperture and short focal length (about 8mm), these are not suitable for use with larger fibers or high NA fibers. These ship with a lens that is AR coated for 800-1000nm infrared lasers. On request, we can install a lens coated for 600-850nm red/near infrared.
By backing the lens away from the fiber tip by about 3mm (6 turns), you can change from a collimated beam to a focused spot 2-3 inches from the lens. In the last few pictures you can see one of the (old style) collimators set up with a 1 watt 830nm fiber coupled laser diode for testing. With the focus properly adjusted, it is able to burn very small holes. This means that it can be used for finely detailed engraving and etching. The bracket and bare fiber adapter shown in these pictures are not included in this listing.
Moving the lens closer to the fiber tip will increase the beam divergence which can be useful for infrared spotlight illumination.
Maximum power considerations: The primary limitation with these collimators is the size of the lens. It's made for fibers around 100um diameter, but can be used with low NA (0.12) fibers up to 200um. The collimator most definitely will not work with a Coherent FAP laser diode, which has a fiber diameter of 800um. Another concern is the AR coatings on the lenses are not as good as I'd like and so the lens may absorb up to 20% of the laser power. The lenses are glass and the rest is metal. At high powers, you can expect the collimator assembly to get warm, but the heat should not cause any damage.

CAUTION
This device allows you to change the highly divergent and thus not very dangerous output from a fiber coupled laser into a narrow beam or a finely focused spot which can be extremely hazardous, especially when used with invisible infrared lasers. Be sure to use appropriate safety goggles and avoid stray reflections when working with this.
